FAQ

What happens in a Laughing Well session?

Every session is designed to help people pause, breathe, reconnect and experience greater wellbeing.

Depending on the type of session, this may include laughter exercises, breathing practices, gentle movement, reflection, conversation and activities that encourage genuine human connection.

Whether you’re joining a Laughter Well, Breathing Well or Thrive Well session, the focus is always on creating a welcoming space where people can feel calmer, more connected and better equipped to navigate everyday life.

What is the difference between Laughter Well, Breathing Well and Thrive Well?

Each offers a different pathway to wellbeing while sharing the same heart and approach.

Laughter Well uses laughter exercises, playful interaction and breathing practices to reduce stress, build connection and bring moments of joy.

Breathing Well focuses on breathing techniques that help calm the nervous system, increase awareness and support emotional wellbeing. Faith-based sessions may also include breath prayers.

Thrive Well combines breathing, movement, reflection, laughter and practical wellbeing tools in a more holistic programme designed to help people build resilience, improve wellbeing and flourish in everyday life.

What is laughter yoga?

Laughter yoga is a wellbeing practice that combines intentional laughter exercises with breathing techniques and playful interaction. Despite the name, it does not involve yoga poses or spiritual practices.

The approach is based on the idea that the body can experience many of the wellbeing benefits of laughter whether laughter begins naturally or intentionally.

I am a certified laughter yoga leader, but my sessions have developed into a broader wellbeing approach that also includes breathing, reflection, movement and connection.

Do I need to be naturally funny, confident or outgoing?

Not at all.

Many people arrive feeling tired, stressed, quiet or even sceptical. There is no expectation to perform, entertain others or “be good” at laughter.

Everything is guided gently, and you’re always free to participate in a way that feels comfortable for you.

Do I have to fake laugh?

There is never any pressure to laugh in a way that feels forced or uncomfortable.

Intentional laughter exercises simply provide a starting point. As people relax and connect, genuine laughter often emerges naturally—but if it doesn’t, that’s perfectly okay too.

Is laughter yoga connected to Hinduism or other spiritual practices?

Laughter yoga was originally developed in India and has historically used some language connected to Hindu traditions.

The sessions I offer are not connected to Hinduism and do not include spiritual practices. They focus on practical wellbeing through laughter, breathing, connection and gentle exercises, making them accessible to people of all backgrounds and beliefs.

Are your sessions suitable for Christians?

Yes.

My Christian faith shapes the heart behind my work and the values that guide how I care for people, while my public wellbeing sessions remain welcoming and inclusive for everyone.

I also offer sessions specifically for churches and Christian organisations. These can include optional breath prayers, biblical reflection or faith-based themes where appropriate.

What breathing techniques do you use?

The breathing practices I teach are simple, accessible exercises designed to help people slow down, regulate stress and become more aware of their breathing.

Some sessions include energising breathing, while others focus on calming techniques. Faith-based sessions may also include breath prayers.

No previous experience is needed.

Who are your sessions suitable for?

My sessions are suitable for a wide range of people, including:

  • individuals experiencing stress or overwhelm
  • workplaces and teams
  • charities and caring professions
  • churches and faith communities
  • parents and caregivers
  • community groups
  • anyone looking for practical ways to support their wellbeing

Sessions can be adapted for different ages, abilities and settings.

Are online sessions still effective?

Yes.

People are often surprised by how connected online sessions feel. The combination of guided breathing, movement, reflection, laughter and shared conversation works remarkably well online, particularly in smaller groups.

What makes your approach different?

My work brings together my background in social work, mentoring and community support with evidence-informed wellbeing practices including laughter, breathing and reflective exercises.

Rather than offering quick fixes, my aim is to create spaces where people feel safe, seen and supported.

Everything I offer is grounded, practical and relational, helping people develop simple habits that support wellbeing long after the session has ended.

What if I feel awkward or unsure?

That’s completely normal.

Many people feel uncertain before their first session, especially if they’ve never tried laughter exercises or guided breathing before.

You’ll never be put on the spot or expected to do anything that feels uncomfortable. You are invited to join in at your own pace, and most people relax within the first few minutes.

Do I need any previous experience?

“No. Everything is guided step by step, and the sessions are designed to be accessible regardless of your age, fitness level or experience.”

Is this therapy or counselling?

“No. Laughing Well offers wellbeing sessions that support stress management, emotional wellbeing and resilience, but they are not a replacement for therapy, counselling or medical treatment. If you’re experiencing significant mental or physical health concerns, I encourage you to seek appropriate professional support.”
